API RP 8B Inspection Reccomendations

Category 1&2      Daily
Category 3          Monthly

Inspection frequencies are only recommendations. The inspection schedule depends heavily on the following:

  • Load Cycles
  • Regulatory Requirements
  • Operating Time
  • Testing
  • Repairs
  • Re-manufacture

Our next hoisting tool email will detail the differences between a category 1, 2, 3, and 4 inspection.

Non-Periodic Inspection

Category 3 or 4 inspection should be made before, if anticipated, and after critical jobs, running casing/drill strings, jarring, puling on stuck pipe, and / or rods.
Remains of Bearings due to improper greasing
Checking conformance to OEM dimensions
Critical Load Inspection - Inspect immediately
Critical loads, for example, impact loads such as jarring, pulling on stuck pipe, rods, etc.  Critical loads can occur due to known and unknown conduct
