  1. With the heads in, why can’t I pull the tong on to the tubing?
Worn jaw pins or jaws. Jaw not retracting all the way inside the gear due to worn lead jaw, debris inside the gear (Dirt, rocks broken piece of gear etc.)

  2. Why does my single air back up post keep falling out shearing the inside roll pin?
Not releasing the air backup after breaking the collar loose.

  3. Why do my jaws work on one tong but does not on another tong?
The jaw is worn right to its limit another tong might have a newer part or debris that allows it to kick just a little further out, bottom line, is the jaw is worn out.

  4. Why do the dies come out and spin around tubing without grabbing?
    • Dies are installed incorrectly
    • Not greasing the rollers in the gear
    • Faulty lead jaw
    • Bushing pins and rollers have flat spots
    • Inner ring has too much wear, or brake band lining is worn
    • Kicker jaw worn out

  5. Why do the bands break so much?
    • Tongs in a bind, hanger bottoming out.
    • Biting on an uneven surface such as the upset part of the tubing.
    • Backup inner sleeve frozen to where it has no movement.
    • Not releasing the backup after breaking a connection loose.
    • Running unlevelled.
    • Broken roller bearings inside the tong.

  6. What should I torque the pipe joint to?
The pipe manufacturer is the one you need to ask this question to, however don’t confuse PSI with foot pounds.
Once you have a torque refer to the tong torque chart to see what oil pressure you need to set the rig at and only use the low gear line on this chart to set rig PSI.

  7. Why won’t the heads let go of the tubing?
    • Wrong size die causing over bite
    • Wrong size jaw or bushing, causing over bite
    • Flat spots that have developed on the rollers, due to lack of grease
    • Debris or burrs in the gear, or on the jaws
    • Bent pins can cause the jaws to stick to the tubing
    • Shimmed dies letting the jaw kick out too far

  8. Why do my air back up dies wear in one spot on all three dies?
This is normal wear, the backup is timed correctly,
which also means you have been on the same size of tubing for a while.

  9. Why do the bolts in the back up ears fit so loose?
Should not be using bolts; use the correct ¾ diameter pin for the back up hanger ears.
Could be worn pins or pin holes.

  10. On my hydraulic back up, my valves keep leaking oil, why?
Tong hoses have to be hooked up pressure to bottom side or it backs up pressure bending the plates letting the o rings pop out too far.
